Real World Lecture: What Do Hackers Know About You? (Virtual Event)

In this lecture we will explore the topic of social engineering, a key approach that is increasingly being used to secure private details and has led to some high-profile security incidents. Find out more about hackers, the case study of hacker Kevin Mitnick, and identify techniques to develop good cyber hygiene. We will cover: • What is social engineering and why it is so effective? • What are the different types of social engineering? (phishing, spearfishing, telephone scams, blackmail etc.) • What do hackers know about you? (probably more than you think!) • When hackers go from bad to good – the case of Kevin Mitnick • What could a hacker do with the information that they have about you? • Good cyber hygiene – what is it, and how can you employ techniques to help keep you safe we will also look at how this interesting topic forms part of our computer science programmes, and we will talk about the other exciting areas of our courses.
