LGBTQ: Britain: Legislation, Activism and Visibility (Virtual Event)

This talk takes a journey from Henry VIII through to the present day, exploring the legacy of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and its impact on the erasure of LGBTQ+ life and experience from public discourse, historical narrative and educational settings in Britain. With a focus on resistance born out of centuries of legislative oppression, this talk explores the tactics, successes and hostile political encounters that confronted key activist movements that were instrumental in bringing about change. From radical drag to the political funeral, Thatcher to Lady Di, and a small bookshop in London to Welsh mining towns, this tour through British LGBTQ+ history details how activist movements have made extraordinary progress in the fight for LGBTQ+ equality and highlights the work that remains.
