We offer a range of support and many opportunities to help get your career off to the best start possible and enabling you to achieve your career and work experience goals.
Our employability team is based across the University, so no matter which campus you’re studying at, we have career and pro bono experts to provide you with a wealth of support during your studies.
We have careers consultants including professional careers advisers, qualified lawyers and legal recruiters, who will draw on their combined experience to provide you with the specialist advice and guidance you need.
Our pro bono experts are all qualified solicitors with current practising certificates who work with other legal practitioners to provide you with hands-on experience of the profession.
What our Employability Service does
We have a programme of activities and career support designed to help you at every step of the way towards a successful career. You can access our employability and career support even before you start your course.
Before you accept a place with us
- Attend an Open Day or employability event, where you can talk to our experts.
- Run through our award-winning online Employability Programmes which include career information and advice; Student Employability Programme (StEP) and Professional Employability Programme.
- Find out about different practice areas in and what skills you need to succeed in each one.
Once you’ve accepted a place with us
As a Postgraduate student, you can access careers support as soon as you accept a place with us. Undergraduate students can access support from mid-August before the start of your course.
You will be sent personal login details to our virtual learning environment, ELITE, where you can find all the information and contact details you’ll need.
Here are just some of the services our team offers:
Work Experience and Pro Bono
The University of Law runs a large and varied legal pro bono programme, offering over 3,500 opportunities each year to enable you to put the skills you’ve learnt into practice.
One-to-One Career Appointments
Whether face-to-face, online, via email or on the telephone, you have access to experienced careers consultants who can provide individually tailored information, advice and guidance on any career related matters from deciding where you want to work, through the application and interview process and beyond.
Careers Workshops
Our careers workshops run throughout the year – both face-to-face at your campus and online. These group sessions help you to get a head start when it comes to applications, assessment centres and pupillage applications.
Mentoring
With the support of over 600 practising lawyers, students at The University of Law have the opportunity to apply to be mentored by a practising solicitor or barrister.
For those with little experience in the law, being mentored is an opportunity to gain an insider’s view of the profession and a chance to benefit from the advice of those currently practising in the world of law.
Employer Talks and Events
We have built up strong connections with firms and chambers nationally and are able to offer an extensive range of employer talks, workshops and careers fairs. These events allow you to hear exactly what it’s like in firms and chambers from those that do.
Job Vacancy Database
Our vacancy database allows current students and alumni, access to company profiles, events, careers adviser appointments and job vacancies. This database can be accessed via Elite.
After you’ve graduated
Our alumni can benefit from ongoing career support after graduating, such as:
- Access to our unique database of job vacancies, including training contracts and pupillages
