On 18 December 2024, The University of Law (ULaw) marked an historic milestone by holding its first-ever international honorary ceremony for graduates and alumni at the Marriott Hotel in Accra, Ghana. Held in partnership with the Empire African Institute, this momentous occasion celebrated the achievements of 100 outstanding graduates from Ghana.
The ceremony brought together distinguished guests, including Professor Peter Crisp, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Ulaw; Ms. Tatiana Rizopoulou, Director of International Partnerships at Ulaw; Justice Yaw Oppong, Director of the Ghana School of Law (GSL) and Justice of the Court of Appeal, Ghana.
Professor Crisp delivered an inspiring keynote address, urging graduates to be optimistic, embrace differing perspectives, and act as agents of change. Drawing on the words of Nelson Mandela and Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, he encouraged graduates to contribute meaningfully to the future of the legal profession in Ghana and beyond.
Justice Yaw Oppong praised Ulaw for its transformative impact on legal education in Ghana, noting that many Ulaw graduates have become outstanding ambassadors in Ghana in the legal field. He expressed his support for a strengthened partnership between ULaw and the GSL, emphasising how this collaboration would elevate the standard of legal education and enhance the influence of Ghanaian lawyers on the global stage.
The graduates honoured at the ceremony had completed a variety of programmes at Ulaw, including the Bachelor of Laws (LLB), Post Graduate Diploma in Law (PGDL), Legal Practice Course (LPC), and Bar Practice Course (BPC). While some studied at ULaw's UK campuses, others studied online from Ghana, demonstrating the global accessibility and flexibility of Ulaw’s programmes.
The honorees included professionals from diverse sectors, including private practice lawyers, civil and public service lawyers, and even politicians and statesmen. This diversity illustrated the far-reaching impact of Ulaw’s programmes in nurturing leaders who shape Ghana’s legal and socio-political landscape.
This inaugural ceremony not only celebrated the remarkable achievements of the graduates but also reinforced ULaw’s mission to provide world-class legal education that transcends borders, empowering students to succeed in their local and global communities.
