Human rights are an individual’s rights and freedoms, which form the basis for the relationship between the government and the individual. At The University of Law, our postgraduate law courses are designed to help you explore this relationship by studying the law designed to protect these rights and freedoms, discovering relevant case studies and learning from legal practitioners with real-world human rights experience.
Whether you’re interested in becoming a solicitor or barrister, or you’re a non-law graduate looking to convert to law, we offer a wide range of postgraduate law programmes designed to teach you the knowledge and skills needed to successfully practise law.
Alternatively, we offer a wide range of academic Master of Laws (LLM) programmes designed to help you enhance your career and master your specialism.
Once you have successful completed your legal training, you may choose to specialise in a particular legal practice areas, such as human rights.
Apart from educational qualifications, it takes a certain kind of person to become a human rights lawyer. As the areas of law involved are varied and subject to rapid change, a genuine interest in human rights and keeping up to date is a prerequisite.
As the law is constantly changing and sometimes unclear or untested, you must also have the ability and confidence to make sound judgements based on previous experience.
Caseloads tend to be large, so you will need good time management skills and the ability to process large amounts of data.
The work can be tremendously satisfying, but potentially very distressing so, in addition to an interest in people and good communications skills, the ability to keep things in perspective is useful.
Are you looking to progress in your career, but wondering how you will be able to fund your studies? We understand that studying at university can be a challenging financial commitment, which is why we offer a variety of scholarships and bursaries to help you achieve your ambitions, whatever your background.
